nobody is above the law.
if retired general sarath fonseka,
if retired general sarath fonseka,
- betrayed and endangered ppl including officers who sacrificed and contributed to defeat tamil tiger (ltte) terrorists (imo he did) in a misguided attempt to score political points ( knowingly or as a puppet of unrepentant supporters of terrorists and appeasers ),
- if he was planning to undermine democracy (there are lot of indications he did imo),
- if he was calling for foreign intervention to make him president after his loss in election (he is on record doing so) ,
he should pay the price. according to law. after a proper trial.
no more no less.
due process has started.
good.
no more no less.
due process has started.
good.
෴
ps
expect ppl who never raised their voices to support military defeat of terrorists (but instead wanted sri lanka to pay the price of lives, human rights, justice, democracy, and freedom, to appease terrorists for a fake peace) to shout empty slogans and platitudes (online and offline) to protest this arrest .

Dear Sitting Nut
"nobody is above the law". I assume you can justify these words referencing historical events which have occurred over the last few years.
"[...] he should pay the price. no more, no less. due process has started. good". ditto.
Rgds
NutMilk.
Yes, the process has started. Why did we wait till the election was over?

why be so cryptic?
where was i inconsistent? :-)

delay in arrest i believe is a price paid to respect democratic process
Dailymirror
Before arrest:
<<"General Sarath Fonseka says the government should arrest him if he had attempted to stage a coup as claimed by the authorities and the failure to take him in to custody could only mean that the claims are fabricated.">>

Try it DSR, it would be over millions of dead bodies that you will have to do it. Sir, don't worry we are with you sir.
Jayantha Jayamanne 2010-02-08 21:41
Hay mann, it could be the other way. MR will be arrested in due course for all his wrong doings and not the General. Mind it.
True TamilSinhaleese 2010-02-08 20:31
This is brave, Yes, if the GOV has any evidence why not arrest?
Instead of arresting the media and so called army deserters,
Lets build the country instead of dithering.

Ela... Well said.... Straight forward answer as a hero....
Calistus Jayatilleke 2010-02-08 21:41
Yea, thats right: without making a big hue and cry about a non-existent coup, why cant the big talkers take action straight away to arrest the culprit or culprits and show the world how our democracy and rule of law works. A good challenge to the cowards.
AFTER arrest
Calistus Jayatilleke 2010-02-08 22:05
Practising the lessons learnt from the Juntas in Myanmar, Iran etc. So, who is Idi Amin now?
Daminda 2010-02-08 22:07
This is very bad... he scarifies his life for this country...is this is the MR's democracy ???? We vehemently condemn this kind of act...The real idi amin is now in action.....
NJ 2010-02-08 22:12
what the!!!!!!!!!!! on what grounds and why is his media secretary is arrested for????????????????????????
Dayan 2010-02-09 00:14
A disgrace to the nation. Nowhere in the world, does this type of mad thing happen. See how other countries treat their war heros. Shameful!
Migara 2010-02-08 23:03
Absolute shame .I can't imagine how people could be so ungreatful.....
He was stupid to have done what he did. There are rules in the armed forces and he should have known. On the other hand knowing his capacity, perhaps he could not understand them.
Let us see if US will come running to save him?
Read this:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sinhala/news/story/2010/02/100208_fonseka_war_crimes.shtml
What was he going to say? That Gota ordered the war crimes and Shavendra carried it out? SF is a man who will sell his mother to get what he wants - he failed to win the election, then he started holding this war crimes threat over the government.
I don't know whether the coup allegations are true or not. But just for that bit of chicanery, the fucker should get his.
"nobody is above the law." - begs the question though why people like Mervyn, Malaka or Duminda haven't been arrested for their various crimes. I believe in justice, not selective justice like we have now.
anon @ 2/09/2010 3:36 am
thanks for exposing blatant hypocrisy of ppl who frequent daily mirror site .
same type of ppl would have been denigrating his actions as army commander to defeat terrorists. now they want sri lankans not to apply the law bc of those . lol.

thanks
yes he should have known.

charlis chapolin :
thanks for the link .
yes i am surprised he thought he can try to blackmail gov and gov will not call his bluff.

n:
poor logic on your part.
principle is that no one should be above the law, whatever he has done .
that one person is not prosecuted ( say for for lack of evidence, etc ) while another is. is no reason to reject that principle .
injustice (if there is) in the way law is applied is another topic .
it is also common world over.
that petty criminals get it hard everywhere, while great criminals more often than not get free, is no reason not to prosecute petty and great criminals if there is an opportunity . same here too.
Lol...does it hurt so much to admit that Mahinda and Co. won't go after their own no matter how much they break the law?
I never said there was anything wrong with Sarath's arrest. What I said is it's wrong that people like Mervyn, etc get away for the wrongs that they do.
Poor comprehension on your part.
Yeah SN its typical hyopcrisy.
Same lot (including mighty free and fair Western media which these colombians also worship) who never supported the war effort, wanted the LTTE to win, the Army to be destroyed and Fonseka to be hauled away to "face the music" in one of the Wests kangaroo courts a few moons ago are now weeping buckets for their new saviour.
It's strange how you claim that no one is above the law, but are happy to gloss over the fact that Mervin is still allowed to be a minister of the present government.
This even after he was publicly seen on state wide TV to be breaking the law when he broke into the Rupavahini complex. Also even after he made a public statement that he had personal knowledge of what happened to Lasantha.
Biased much 'libetarian'...?
n:
you weak attempt to claim my comprehension is faulty fails .
this post is about sarath foseka's arrest. see the title?
your bringing in mervyn (a person i have always criticized even while ngo peaceniks were marching with him hand in hand in 2006 at pro terrorist appeasement rallies and listening to his invited speeches ) here, only serves one purpose - to question the justice of sf arrest .
as i said
"injustice (if there is) in the way law is applied is another topic .

right you are!
-
anon @ 2/09/2010 11:42 am
lol how ppl like you always fall on mervyn when they have run out of arguments.
and you are always ignorant
-
you are free to read my posts on mervyn's doings and comment on them . unlike ngo peacenik i have always criticized him . i attacked him while ngo peaceniks were holding pro terrorist appeasement rallies with his invited participation and help . i attacked him when he created a disturbance in rupavahini . etc etc.
i am not sure if there are real evidence to convict him, if you have, by all means reveal them.
that he is a douche and a disgrace to gov i totally agree.
-
however what does mervyn has to with sarath fonseka arrest? lol
as i said to n before
"principle is that no one should be above the law, whatever he has done .

"Biased much 'libetarian'...?"
i loyalty is to libertarian principles , can you describe how i have betrayed them here ?
do qoute
if you can't do that , dispense with quotation marks. that is if you are honest , other wise you are free to keep them on dishonestly.
lol @ confused anon
It is people like you who will be responsible for the disappearance or democracy and rule of law in this great country.
We are about to have a government like China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, Burma, Libya....
Hardly libertarian if you ask me.
Maybe you should change the name of your blog to lanka despotarian.
Nut,
Few questions.
You say “nobody is above the law.” Is this applicable to Shaveendra De Silva too? Or is he exempted?
If it is applicable and *assuming* he did commit war crimes shouldn’t he brought before the law and have a 'fair' trial?
*Assuming* Shaveendra committed war crimes (perhaps ones shown in Channel 4 video) is it ‘betrayal’ revealing them?
So is truth bad and lies good?
Please don’t bluff (I see you usually do when faced with questions you cannot answer)
Appreciate you trying to give direct answers.
I honestly don't think that he would have been able to execute a coup. The real reason for his arrest is his challenge to testify against the Sri Lankan government and military in an international war crimes inquiry. The government simply couldn't afford to keep him loose after that.
I always thought that if it comes to this, the government will have no option but to assassinate him. Perhaps that will follow.

explain how.
making empty allegations is easy but if you cannot even explain how it will happen then you are being stupid .
lol
"Maybe you should change the name of your blog to lanka despotarian."
since i have never betrayed my libertarian principles i don't see the need
if you saw me betraying them by all mean quote me doing that.
lol
but you won't and run away from that challenge bc i have not . ever

anon @ 2/09/2010 10:42 pm
shavindra silva is not above the law but your allegations of war crimes against him and other are false .
the allegations made by sf to leader rag were false. the terrorists named there were killed ( while fighting note) by soldiers coming under kamal gunarathna not gen silva.
unless you have evidence, do not make terrorist propaganda spread lies here . but then of you believe in channel 4 thing you are probably a pro terrorist racist
-
i never bluff i use reason and facts .. and why not link your blog when commenting here . did i give you good spanking earlier?
i do treat pro terrorist racist liars like you who make claims like yours without even shred of evidence the treatment they deserve
lol
bardo flanks:
i also don't think sf would have been successful with a coup .
however he was certainly attempting something like that . evidence is there.
gov could/should not allow even an attempt .
as for his attempted black mail about alleged war crimes , i don't that would have mattered in the end since he testimony is tainted given his political actions. he was also blatantly false about white flag thing ( see my previous comment) .
however gov again could / should not allow such attempts at blackmail to continue it shodul not allow its officer from slander, endangerment etc.
he should and would face justice according to law . i don't think there is any need for 'assassination', that is silly .

දේශපාලුවා:

So you think it was Kamal Gunaratne who committed war crimes not Shaveendra De Silva?

Anon,
Firstly you have failed to grasp the reality that the whole exercise from beginning to end for people like SittingNut and for people like us is about National Security. Fonseka's arrest is related to National Security. However other implications there may be(?) regarding it those are not RELEVANT and would not overcome the importance of National Security.
Shavindra - "is it ‘betrayal’ revealing them?"
Depends on who's asking ! For LTTE dieAssPora it will be the biggest heroism ever.
"So is truth bad and lies good?"
Same answer as above ! Side question: I assume you know which is the truth and which is the lie?
Finally,
Let those who want to bring Shavindra (isn't Gotabhaya the real target though?) to international war crimes tribunals TRY - and let us DO OUR BEST to stop it from happening EVER.
THE NATION HAS PRIORITIZED (remember? this is post-26th era)
both/same anon @ 2/10/2010 2:21 pm
so asking you to stick to facts is 'bluffing '
lol
"So you think it was Kamal Gunaratne who committed war crimes not Shaveendra De Silva?"
killing armed terrorists who are trying to kill soldiers is not a war crime. moron .
i pointed out facts about which general's soldiers killed those terrorists bc the false allegation that terrorists propagandists like you spread is even mistaken as to who was where when .
i think your comments prove who the real 'jackass' is clearly . and in your case there will be no need to put you progeny down at birth bc an eunuch like you wont have any

you are free and welcome to give your views here. thanks
however pl don't try ascribe your motives on me .
my take on things is primarily based on libertarian principles . national security is secondary to that and only taken in to account when our freedom, lives, democracy , rule of law , and rights, are threatened .

Fonseka arrest- The correct action for the country
Well said (from Adaderana comments):
"February 11, 2010 02:56 am
Even after Sarath Fonseka made a satement to the BBC that he is willing to appear in front of an International Court TO GIVE EVIDENCE AGAINST THE COUNTRY AND HIS OWN ARMY,utterly selfish and partisan people are willing to file Fundemental Rights cases and write comments on behalf of him. By giving evidence against his motherland he is just not incriminating and tarnishing the name of MR and Gotabhaya, also the whole ARMY and the country too for years to come. Only people who expected LTTE to defeat the Army and make way for a UNP govt from the resulting unpopularity and chaos will support such a person.Democracy,Media Freedom,Fundemental Rights are just catch phrases used to make way for a UNP govt.Past experience tells everybody as soon as their party is in power all those rights are suspended indefinitely and these people become see no evil ,hear no evil deaf and dumb hypocrits benefitting from their corruption and abuses. No military commander in America or England,(the countries you guys worship) up to now never said or would say such a thing even after retiring from the Army.A point to ponder before commenting just because you lost the election.
Ranaweera"
Ranils lies about the country.
I cannot believe the audacity of this man.
