last night’s terrorists attacks should remind indians and their government that tolerating terrorists ( and their supporters) of any nationality will backfire on them.

israel should (probably will) "bomb" iran soon

if they have the capacity (most ppl think they have) israel should attack and "take out" iran's suspected nuclear facilities soon (as in before end of year). imo they probably will.

there are several reasons.

• obviously attacking after iran has developed a nuclear bomb is silly.
• waiting for "diplomacy" to succeed has failed, again obviously. while usa and rest can take the risk of waiting, israel cannot. iran's n-bomb = bye bye israel (sooner or later).
• high probability (65% chance according to futures market prices) of obambi winning and thus putting even more pressure on israel to fruitlessly wait than bush administration.
• iran's present capacity to respond will only cause limited damage to israel itself. iran's missiles (it has them, silly photoshoping was just to show it has more) are inaccurate and targets in square kms not meters. as such with conventional warheads they are less lethal than terrorist suicide bombers; a threat israel is well used to.

as such, israel if it follows its own best interests (as any state should), should and probably will attack soon.

but what will be the consequences of that attack, on the rest of the world?

that will depend on rationality of iran's leaders. if they are sensible to their own interests, rest of the world has not much to fear.

in that case, iran will not attack americans directly, or close the straits of hormuz given the likely terrible repercussions on themselves (such actions and american response will be costly to americans too, but iran will get the worst of it in the end). in this scenario iran will fire off several missiles at israel and will stop at that. (it is already helping terrorists to attack israel and americans so there wont be any increase in that front anyway).

worst that rest of the world will have to suffer, will probably be a week of very high oil prices. in fact imo attack will be beneficial in the sense it will take away one cause of instability (i.e. constant speculation about the israeli attack - iran's missile tests increased oil price by $6 on last thursday) in the region for some time.

of course if iran's leaders act like crazies all bets are off. but that is unlikely. for one thing, iran is not quite a dictatorship, it is a theocratic oligarchy. more people there are in leadership, less crazy and thankfully more selfish decision making will be.

will israel's leaders have the balls to do what is in their best interests? we will soon see.

i was deliberate in avoiding the question of moral right (so to speak) of iran to have nuclear weapons in main post.

in the opinion of most, nobody (including usa) has a moral right to n-weapons. but that is irrelevant and naive. in reality it is in best interests of usa to have nuclear weapons given world history and politics. similarly, it is in best interests of iran to try to have them, and of usa and israel to try to prevent iran having them.

most of rest of the world's (i.e. those who value democracy and capitalism, aka individual political and economic rights - including sri lanka and me as an individual) interests coincide with usa's for the most part, and to a lesser extent with israel's.( however there is no harm in playing iran against others to milk both sides, as sl already do).

as i have said before this is not something new; this what ltte pussies do. they have done it at all times (warning: graphic photos) during ceasefire periods, during periods when government was not conducting military operations, and during periods of military operations.

will peaceniks and ltte parrots stupidly connect this with the unlamented ceasefire agreement(cfa)'s official end today? probably. see here for what they did after another recent bombing forgetting what went before. that was typical. i have no doubt they will repeat that performance today yet again. let us bloggers see which peacenik blog is first to blame everyone but the terrorist pussies for this murder.

all other sri lankans, with eyes to see reality and not beholden to terrorists, know what terrorists really are, and that this kind crime is to be expected from them at all times, cfa or no cfa .

existence of ltte terrorists are not compatible with principles of justice, freedom, human rights, or democracy. only peacenik criminals who have no regard these principles( in spite of their public lip service ) will advocate peace with these murderers.

government to withdraw from cfa

sri lankan cabinet decided to withdraw from the ceasefire agreement (cfa) with ltte, just few minutes ago

cfa became a license for murder to terrorists, almost from the moment it was signed, with the impotent and biased sri lanka monitoring mission (slmm) doing nothing to stop the intentional ceasefire violations by ltte pussies (several fold greater in quantity and "quality" than unintentional violations by sl military). this in spite of slmm not counting several bombs and assassinations as ceasefire violations, while counting sl police entering so called ltte territory to arrest a pedophile as a ceasefire violation. btw by the example of slmm, we can have a fairly good idea why the peacenik promoted (and as usual with ideas promoted by them, unrealistic) un monitoring mission will fail and should be opposed, .

in light of events, it soon became clear that cfa was useful to sri lankan democracy only as a spin to gain moral high ground or as a tactical device in the road to defeating of ltte

but cfa's usefulness as such began to wane when ltte started attacking the sl military and civilians unprovoked in december 2005. in spite of that sl military only engaged in limited retaliation after april 06 when there was an attempt to assassinate the army commander. gosl began to engage in focused military operations after mavil aru, even later

all that time certain slmm heads acted in a biased and criminal manner ( it goes without saying that terrorist parroting peacenik ngos and criminals as usual sucked up to ltte and were blind to ltte atrocities.)

anyway it became evident to anyone who is not blind to sri lankan reality and ltte's continuing murderousness that cfa's usefulness to gain moral high ground against ltte was no longer needed. even a buffalo fighting ltte will have a higher moral standing than ltte pussies or their paecenik suckers.

in any case given the fact that government is duty bound to provide security and to protect the human rights of all sri lankans and that requires fighting ltte, and cfa is no longer useful in that fight it is time to withdraw.

what is more, if this withdrawal is accompanied by banning of ltte, certain activities of some helpers of terrorists (especially peaceniks' ) can become legally liable for prosecution. similarly certain foreigners will not be able to lend support (moral or otherwise) to, or to deal directly with ltte. (if peaceniks continue with certain things mevin silva won't be the only peacenik who will get their just deserts)

so i hope this will be followed by a ban on ltte.

biased journalism: was kebitigolawa bus a military target ?

after yesterday's terrorist suicide bomb targeting innocents, certain foreign correspondents (from afp and reuters specifically) took it upon themselves to make a totally unfounded judgment about terrorist's targeting criteria. they said that ltte has not targeted civilians in recent years ( even they cannot deny earlier horrors of pussies) limiting themselves to military targets. they went on to say that this targeting may be a retaliation for military operations.

have they forgotten kebitigollewa bus massacre that killed at least 67 people including 15 children on 15 June 2006 (link contains photos and is not for the faint of heart). this was before mavil aru so before any major military operation by gosl. have they forgotten the killings of innocent farmers that happen regularly (last one on 26 november 3 days ago in mahavilachchiya e-village)

of course this kind of biased pro terrorist reporting is nothing new. as i and others have pointed out, racists like simon gardner of reuters and bbc' sri lankan section regularly and repeatedly engage in this sort of reporting. in addition to such white washing of terrorists, such reporters engage in several other forms of biased journalism when it comes sri lanka; racist equation of tamils with terrorists, unquestioning acceptance of ltte's false claim to be representative of tamils, wrong identification of gosl as "sinhalese" (when it fact all the major democratic minority parties are in it), and repetition of absurd white van conspiracy theories of terrorists among others.

so what are we, as ordinary sri lankans opposed terrorism, to do to counter them ?

well for a start, speak out when you see such reports, write about them, and openly condemn them. write to the editors or administrators of mainstream news outsets (be they newspapers, tv stations, or websites) that publish this kind of reporting. most have feedback options, use them. just state the facts and why the report is inaccurate, simply. don't worry too much about english. be authentic.

such write backs matter because generally people who run mainstream news organizations and websites want to preserve their reputations and credibility. as people who have worked in news organizations will know pro israeli organizations and individuals (rightly) send letters by the dozens when there is even a hint of an inaccuracy in reports about israel in any newspaper anywhere in world. we cannot match that, but we can start. in any case reports about sri lanka are comparatively rare, so any letter you write will ultimately help induce people who write and publish, to think twice and check facts in the long term.

bloggers have reacted in various ways; some merely acted as reporters, a lot expressed shock and horror, some have been sober and solid in their analysis, others (like cerno) have made valid points about our psychological non reaction to bombs (though it must be stated that most ppl i know were genuinely concerned and hardly indifferent, even though or because of, like me, most have experienced bombs at first hand).

most "interesting " have been the reaction of peacenik bloggers (btw it is great that blogosphere that only two years ago consisted almost exclusively of peaceniks, a tiny minority of sri lankan public at large, now increasingly accommodate other bloggers. at this rate, as i predicted, we would eventually have a blogosphere that will genuinely represent sri lanka).

anyway the peacenik bloggers were "oh so horrified", and after blaming mahinda buffalo, chithanaya, militray, and even the public ( but never the terrorist pussies who according to them will "love peace" if given the opportunity - really !) want us to appease terrorist so that we get "peace". they as usual forget to mention that such a course will involve giving up principles of democracy, human rights, justice, and freedom. similarly they forget millions who will have to suffer a living death under ltte if there was such an appeasement. to peacniks those people (or anyone outside their colombo/foreign cocoons for that matter) are not human.

i was tempted to challenge them in their own blogs but unfortunately am busy at the moment. however as soon as i get some free time i will write a post going through a selection of their posts in detail and examining their confused logic and attitudes.
