did cpa plagiarize dbs jeyaraj in the their trinco report?

in my last post i examined and exposed the bias evident in recent centre for policy alternatives(cpa) report. since then it has emerged that the said report is in fact a partial plagiarism of writings of ltte sympathizer and blogger dbs jeyaraj or his sources.

while the recent updated blog post of dbs jeyaraj was published after the cpa report there are enough evidence to show that authors of cpa report had access to the jeyaraj's writing before its publication and that cpa was plagiarizing jeyaraj and not the other way around.

here is the evidence:

in cpa report following sentence occurs,
It appeared that several large shops were specifically targeted – among them were Hari Electricals, the Dollar Agency, the Dialog Company and the Sunlight (Lever Brothers) Agency. The mob also attacked the Hatton National Bank.

in jeyaraj
The violence was initially confined to areas near the Clock tower , Central road, Main street, North Coast road etc. It appeared that several large shops were specifically targeted - among them were Hari Electricals, the Dollar Agency, the Dialog Company and the Sunlight (Lever Brothers) Agency. The mob also attacked the Hatton National Bank.

(i have already raised questions regarding the validity of content of the sentence in my previous post. so i will confine myself to examining the plagiarism here)

it is obvious that one of them is a cut and paste job from the other. now why do i say that the original was from jeyaraj?
well look at the sentence preceding it in his post and then notice how he goes on to detail how police did not respond to emergency alarms set off by hatton national bank, how vehicles of bank employees were attacked and how the bank employees are supposedly on strike demanding security guarantees. (as i said let us forget the validity of these claims for now)

in other words jeyaraj provides context to that statement as well as additional details while cpa report does not.

since the sentences are identical we have to conclude that cpa was plagiarizing jeyaraj or his source.

another instance
from jeyaraj
The Government imposed curfews in three divisions including Trinco town and gradually relaxed them. People however have been displaced due to the violence. 319 from 98 families are housed in Bharathy Vidyalayam in Varothaya nagar; 243 from 67 families are in Kalaimagal vidyalayam in Bharathypuram. 275 from 75 families are in the Bharathipuram school. Some are stayng with relatives while some others have fled to Tiger controlled areas.
As of the 20th April, the District Secretariat, Trincomalee, had the displaced figure at 2673 persons (723 families). This does not take into account the large numbers who are residing with family and friends, and those who are simply leaving their homes at night-time for more secure locations. The response to the displacement, even from NGOs, has been slow, hampered by the prevailing tensions and lack of personnel. In some areas government assistance was received only on the 18th April, despite the fact that people were displaced on the 14th April.

from cpa
The violence, as well as the fear and insecurity experienced by the civilians, has led to a fairly substantial displacement. As of the 20th April, the District Secretariat, Trincomalee, had this figure at 2673 persons (723 families). This does not take into account the large numbers who are residing with family and friends, and those who are simply leaving their homes at night-time for more secure locations. The response to the displacement, even from NGOs, has been slow, hampered by the prevailing tensions and lack of personnel. In some areas government assistance was received only on the 18th April, despite the fact that people were displaced on the 14th April.

as you can see jeyaraj provides more context and details while cpa seems to be busy copying and pasting selectively.

these are just two instances, there are lot more, but i will for now confine my self to them.

what is curious about this blatant plagiarism is that jeyarj who does not conceal his bias still gives details and figures for sinhala victims while cpa so very obviously ignores or lessens them.
here is a example

from jeyaraj
The body of a Sinhala youth named Nissanka from Mahindapura was found in Thoorankaadu on April 14th morning. Missing from the 13th he had been hacked to death.

from cpa
The body of a young Sinhala man, identified as Nissanka, was found in Mahindapura on the 14th April. He had been missing since the 13th.

notice the missing words (hacked to death) not to mention location of the dead body.

those who signed the cpa statment
in light of the above i and anybody else who examines this have to ask again, did all those who signed the cpa statment really participate in a bona fide 'fact finding mission'? or did they just sign on a piece of paper put before them.

while i can believe they are biased against the government and the military, i am still not convinced that all of them knowingly took part in so obvious a plagiarism but then i may be wrong.

anyway it's upto them to clear themselves of taint of plagiarism and bad faith and explain how their signatures got on that piece of plagiarism.

as for centre for policy alternatives itself, what more an can be said of its complete lack of professionalism and all too obvious bias.

can anyone provide me with email addresses of the ppl who signed the cpa report.
i intend to ask each one whether they actually took part in a bona fide fact finding mission, and if they did whether they can answer the questions i have already raised about it. in addition i will ask how they were persuaded to put their name on such a piece of blatant plagiarism.
my email address is sittingnut(at)gmail(dot)com
if you are unable to send addresses for some reason but is in contact with any one of those ppl . pl ask the said questions yourself and post the answers.

Please make a better attempt to understand the situation before accusing anyone of plagiarism. Has DBSJ said that his work has been plagiarised? Do you know DBSJ's relationship with the CPA or rather Pakiasothy? If you knew the answers to these questions then you needn't have had this post here at all. I know you've titled it as "DID cpa plagiarise" but in the comment above you seem to have conveniently accepted it as a fact by saying "blatant plagiarism"

S/nut- one more thing. I am not trying to pick a fight with you (eventhough it sounds like one!) :)

don't worry, i know. :-)
-
i never intend these posts or comments as personnel attacks though i do sometimes use strong language. but some ppl think i am doing so and treat me like a sworn enemy.
i am certainly not going to make the their mistake and treat you or anyone else for that matter like one. :-)
-
i think i am on very sound ground when i accuse authors of this report of plagiarism

1)as far as i can read dbs jeyaraj was not one of those who signed the cpa report unless dbs jeyaraj is pseudonym of one of them (which if confirmed given the kind of posts in his/her blog will make this even more 'interesting')
2) whether dbs jeyaraj agreed or not beforehand, or raises no objections (or is even delighted, as probably he is) in the future, that his writing was used in cpa report does not alter the fact that there was no mention of him in the cpa report.

if cpa was going to use his writing as they have actually done, they should have acknowledged that in the report itself. nothing of the kind is there.

so its a plagiarism

according oxford english dictionary
plagiarize v. (also -ise) (-zing or -sing) 1 (also absol.) take and pass off (another's thoughts, writings, etc.) as one's own. 2 pass off the thoughts etc. of (another person) as one's own. plagiarism n. plagiarist n. plagiarizer n. [Latin plagiarius kidnapper]

wikipedia
Plagiarism is a form of academic malpractice specifically referring to the use of another's information, language, or writing, when done without proper acknowledgment of the original source. Plagiarism is not necessarily the same as copyright infringement, which occurs when one violates copyright law.

more from answers.com

in addition to that by not acknowledging jeyaraj's authorship they tried to pass a ltte (almost as good as )sympathizer's words as results of 'a fact-finding team of civil society representatives' on the readers. if that is not cheating what is?

S/nut - again, we are talking about people's lives. Is it such a big issue if the articles by Jeyray or whomever have been copied.

Again, I despair, people are being brutalised. The excuse to continue to brutalise them is "the war on Terror".

A "soverign" elected government must protect all it's citizens.

Well yes, silly me I forgot, the Tamils of the north-east did not play a part in the elections. Oh yes, of course, and every single one of them was influenced by the Tigers.

ashanthi:
S/nut - again, we are talking about people's lives
yes to an extent tamils and other communities in ne are suffering and tamils in particular are partly responsible bc of their cowardice at last election when they did what ltte wanted. but it will be infinitely worse when ltte get what it is now driving at with its attacks and provocations :war.

A "soverign" elected government must protect all it's citizens.
so you want government to attack the tigers straight away ? and rescue all the citizens?
that will be war. i don't think that will work

only thing to do is show restraint in the face ltte attacks and hope that pressure from international community will bring ltte back to table. if ltte refuse to talk and start the war themselves they will bear the full responsibility.

cpa ppl try to relieve that pressure and excuse that responsibility from the ltte (so far without any success).and this post is about one of their methods.
that is why
it such a big issue if the articles by Jeyray or whomever have been copied.
they should be exposed. for what they really are.

from point of view of the reader it makes sense. they would not know whether the cpa did plagiarise or not at the beginning. after the examples they will see that it was in fact a blatant plagiarism.

personal or professional relationships of mr pakiasothy (which are not my or any reader's concern) do not make any difference to the argument since jeyaraj was not mentioned in cpa report.

Have you thought about the fact that it could have been the other way about. reports are not put together in ONE day.

ashanthi said...

how about you expose each & every bully, thug, murdering rapist instead huh?

I'm more than happy to put up with a bit of plagerism, frankly. Why are you making such an assumption that everyone who is supposedly for peace is on the side of the ltte??? This is really confusing s/nut - but really this is the message you are putting across???

i.sh. said...

"...tamils in particular are partly responsible bc of their cowardice at last election..."

sittingnut, you shouldn't be so harsh on tamils. i was in ltte-controlled areas at the time of elections, and a family i knew tried to vote, but got stopped at the checkpoint, had their voting papers torn up, and were turned back by the LTTE.

I met an elecction monitor who was staioned in the East somewhere in governemnt ares (i think trinco or batti), he said that busloads of hired Singhalese thugs were brought in to inimidate locals into not working.

I don't think you can blame Tamils for not voting, since it seems a lot of people in their immediate surrounding didn't wanted them to. You can't expect people to risk their lives or risk getting beaten up for something which may not end up having that much of an impact on their lives.

ivap said...

He certainly is a tamil nationalist but I don't think DBS is a ltte sympathizer any more. Isn't he against the ltte and didn't they threaten his life at one stage or another? I recall reading that the SL government intervened and got the canadian police act.

If that's a report the CPA needs a bagging. That was a statement at best.

ashanthi - I'm more than happy to put up with a bit of plagerism, frankly.

Plagiarism is a big/serious problem. It is effectively lying and destroys a lot of credibility and reputation capital. Particularly if they take a holier than thou approach to issues.

Recently at local uni they found that 40% had plagiarised on an assignment....sad

ashanthi said...

Hey Ivap - sorry in the context of SL, I think Rajapakse getting on Dateline & trying to convince everyone (including) himself that there are "no paramilitaries" in the North-East to be such a horrendous lie that it bothers on pshycopathic.

Be good if you would do an indepth analysis of that very recent news story. Rajapakse came across as very likable and genuine except for the garbage that came out of his mouth. I certainlly would not pick him for a hawke & I wonder whether he is being fed all sorts of rubbish by the army. A bit like what has happened in Iraq. One thing about the Rajapakse's is at least when you see them, they don't have the stains of the Bandaranike's or Jayawardenes.

So - just make sure that you & s/nut are not attacking the CPA because of their message.

Plagiarizing stories is common place. With the advent of the internet where there is such a demand for content & where instead of reading one newspaper, readers can view 5, I find it boring when I see snippets of an original Reuters report (especialy on SL) being regurgitated by countless SL local rags & the SMH, the Age etc... For example, you will note that they all have something like "60000 people have been killed in the war against the Tamil tigers" Well I think the figures are probably now upto 100,000. With disinformation from the GOSL - what can one expect.

Honest is a 2 way street.

As for the Uni stats you quote - it's not sad, it's fraud. I have no b/ground info on that so can't really comment.

they may not be put together on one day but they are published on a day. and i really don't see the exact point you are making. sorry

well these ppl are excusing such ppl using fake evidence. they too need exposing.

Why are you making such an assumption that everyone who is supposedly for peace is on the side of the ltte?
really did i? where?

really this is the message you are putting across?
that cpa plagiarized a report? yes!

With disinformation from the GOSL
only from gosl? what is this report?

just make sure that you & s/nut are not attacking the CPA because of their message.
in th emain posts i explained in detail why i make these claims. if you can defend the cpa by answering questions raised all credit to you. their report as i said gives peace a bad name.

Plagiarizing stories is common place.
does that excuse cpa passing off a post by jeyaraj as results of a fact finding?

oh i have no problem with those living in ltte controlled areas.they had no choice.

You can't expect people to risk their lives or risk getting beaten up for something which may not end up having that much of an impact on their lives.
but if they thought a little it would have been evident that only thing ltte hoped by electing the mahinda buffalo with his sinhala chauvinist rhetoric and allies was war this year, that is hardly 'not much of an impact'. only buffalo probably disappointed ltte by turning pragmatic almost immediately he was in office.

we dealt with this after the election(and immediately before in two posts too) so you may read what i think about the whole election boycott in my november and december 2005 posts .

jeyaraj's present posts are hardly unbiased.
as i said in reply to yaaro.he may be in the same place as tna mps, forced to support the ltte bc of the situation in the ground and lack of anybody else to support. i have no problem with him, just with cpa

If that's a report the CPA needs a bagging. That was a statement at best.
if its not a report, they should publish the report, as i have asked in the previous post.
probably there is no proper report, only the piece of plagiarism.
if there was no proper 'fact finding' or a report they should not publish even a statement saying there was a fact finding.

Kudos to you sittingnut on some good work done. But what surprises me, is that CPA used to make some sense when ever Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu spoke on TV.He is always eloquent, upto the point and sounds very credible (or I thought so). So one would never expect an organisation led by him to be so lowly as to plagiarise. I would really love to see what he has to say about all your observations.
I for one agree with most of your observations/views although I must say Jeyaraj more often than not gives a lot of details on his observations, which are crucial in convincing a sensible reader.

Yaaro said...

as for jeyaraj, his bias is apparent so there is no point in showing him up as biased and few ppl will believe him anyway. he is free to say whatever he wants to help the ltte.

these cpa ppl on the other hand pretend to be different and impartial when they are as biased as jayaraj and in fact using his words!

yaaro:
i will send emails to all those who signed but its they who should not have published biased plagiarized statements that can be (and was, did you see the tamilnet article on this report?) abused in order sling undeserved mud at the military. i and every body else have a right to raise valid questions and expose them after it has been published.
let them answer.

ashanthi said...

The bottom line is this - if the military is a sacred cow to you s/nut, you are not going to like anyone giving them stick.

I'm sorry but there are probably 100's of 1000's of Sri Lankans of every creed & colour that would love to sit you down & give you a lecture about the army, the police & all the various tribes of bullies & thugs that run Sri Lanka. In fact. I think you know full well how horrible it is for young Sinhalese boys when they first start up in the army until they become hardened killers.

So please, you are on the ground, you need to go & find out these real stories. Not the army machine's propaganda. I sympathise with every young man or women who sacrificed their lives in any war. All because people like you & Morq can't bloody get on.

Unltimately until we have an 80 per cent consensus amongst the Sinhalese ruling elite to treat the Tamil people with respect & afford them their human rights, there will never be peace in SL.

There will however always be an ltte, a JVP & a whole bunch of thugs - albeit in various uniforms.

C'mon it all depends on you're ethnicity what you think about the GOSL's police, Karuna paramilitary & army & JVP thugs or ltte. Let's stop pretending here. All depends on who hates you - if you're Tamil & male between the ages of 15 to 45 you're in deep shit because under the GOSL's "draconian" anti-Tamil oh sorry terrorist laws - you are in deep, deep shit.

Kindly refrain from continuing to elude that I am an apologist for the ltte, AGAIN!!! I am not an apologist for any bastard that goes around killing anybody, anywhere on the planet.
